1930s Golf – Hickory Golf Challenge

In celebration of 70 years of the European Masters, a 2 hole stroke play exhibition competition took place in Crans-Montana yesterday after play, but there was a twist. Hickory Golf clubs! We had 3 European Tour stars: Lee Westwood (9 x Ryder Cup player), Danny Willett (2016 Masters Champion) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (21 time European Tour winner) play against each other as well as Paolo Quirici, the 2013 Hickory World Golf Champion.

I would love there to be a tournament where the top tour pros all use old equipment from a defined era.

We played at Whistling Straits with a hickory-shaft-only golf fellow whose family ran a course that at one time held major championships. He was so terrific with those clubs, it was a pleasure to watch. One of the shafts split during the round and he took out the tape, made a few wraps around, and continued to play. Great stuff.
