The Only Two Drills You Need For The Perfect Golf Swing Takeaway

Many times the issues you guys deal with later in your swing or the things you want to fix are actually caused because your takeaway is off. We need to look at what you are doing in the initial set up or in the takeaway that might be leading to problems later on. If you can clean up your takeaway, setup and grip, I’m telling you like 75% of your issues are probably going to be fixed.

The issue I see most often with the takeaway is the disconnected look where the hands will go away from the body, excessive forearm rotation and the club gets inside.

These are two drills I use with students – one with a tee and one with an alignment rod – to fix takeaways. If you have a takeaway that’s off and understand why it’s happening and do one or both of these drills, you’ll be able to fix it pretty quickly.

  1. Great advice and tips for a perfect takeaway. I have never heard that before,

  2. Good stuff!. Great explanation and drills. This video will help a ton of golfers. So many over the top slicers have a backswing fault that looks like this. Another useful drill to help with this takeaway issue, and a favorite of #1 Euro coach Pete Cowen, is hitting half shots cross-handed as a drill. For a right handed golfer, place left hand low on grip. This drill practically forces an on plane takeaway, and instantly gives a golfer a totally different feel for what a good takeaway should feel like. It also promotes a straighter left arm. For me, the left arm will feel much more connected. Easy to feel the correct in sequence shoulder turn as well. All these drills help fix the problem. Check out Pete's Euro Tour student, Matt Fitzpatrick, taking full swings cross-handed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BCWo-GGS9fP/?taken-by=mattfitz94

  3. I would love to see the connection between this takeaway to a full backswing! Specially, if there's any difference with a driver!

  4. Another excellent unique golf tip ! The club head is perfectly placed outside the hands with this tee drill. Thanks Eric!
